This collection contains letters and other items collected by Harlan Luckhurst.

Harlan R. Luckhurst was born May 30, 1921, at his parents' home in Elrod Township, the son of Ralph and Ingebor (Peterson) Luckhurst. He was baptized and confirmed in the Naples Lutheran Church and attended school in Day and Merton townships, and at Naples, and Clark. In 1942 he was inducted into the service and became a member of the 916th Field Artillery Battalion. He underwent his training in Oregon. Mr. Luckhurst served in Africa and Italy during World War II. The majority of the letters in this collection are those Harlan sent to his future wife, Ailene Garey, while overseas. On May 21, 1943, Harlan and Ailene were united in marriage. The couple live and farmed in Maydell Township near Garden City until moving into Clark in 1988. Mr. Luckhurst continued farming and assisting at the farm until his death on October 5th, 1998.

Mr. Luckhurst was a member of the United Methodist Church at Clark, a life member of the Clark V.F.W. and the Clark American Legion. Other memberships included the Masonic Lodge #175 of Raymond, Peace Chapter #160 Eastern Star, Clark County Historical Society, and the Watertown Questers. He had served on the Maydell and Garden City school boards and the Maydell Township board. Mr. Luckhurst was the Clark County chairman of Town and Townships Association, where he had also served as a director at the state level. He was a leader for 16 years in the Garden City Spudders and Clever Clovers 4-H clubs.
