Queen Lorene Cowhick Marshal Larry Winters Perkins Announces 1961 Parade Registration; Over 100 Units To Perform Saturday Mornin Royal Order Of Gyps Will Crown King Ceremony To Climax Evening's Program • Les Johnson, Owner and Manager of Tiffany Laundry, is crowned "King of the Gyps" for 1960, by Jack IIaldeman, Office Manager for Hub City Iron, 1959 king. Johnson's successor will be crowned tonight at the Civic Theater. The Exponent Volume 60, No. 3 South Dakota's Northern College — Aberdeen, South Dakota October 6, 1961 Gypsy Clan Chooses 1961 Royal Couple As of press time, the line-up for the Gypsy Day parade consists of 104 bands, floats and cars. Owen Perkins, Chairman of the Committee, expects even more participants before the deadline. Honorary guests who will be in the parade are Governor Gubbrud, Presi-dent Kramer, Commissioner Gerdes, Senators Mundt and Case, and Repre-sentative Reif el. These dignataries will follow the V.F.W. Color Guard and the NSTC Band. Other participants, in the prescribed order, are; the Willow Lake High School Band, Steele Hall float, former Gypsy Queens, First National Bank, Founders of Gypsy Day, Hitchcock High School Band, NSTC Business Club, E. 0. Johnson Motors, U. S. Navy, Northville High School Band, Senior Class, Reed-Johnson Agency, Waverly High School Band, Lincoln Hall, Loel Lust Chevrolet Company, Corona High School Band, Phi Alpha Mu Sinfonia, Aberdeen School of Commerce, Student Council, Bowdle High School Band, Wesley Club, Baggett's Conoco, and the Columbia Visiting Dignitaries Expected At NSTC During Gypsy Day Many prominent persons will be present for Northern's annual Gypsy Day. Governor Gubbrud will crown the new queen and marshal at the Friday evening ceremonies. On Saturday Senators Francis Case and Karl Mundt and Representative Ben Reifel will he in Aberdeen. One of the founders of Gypsy Day, Px , 1 Keiser of Toledo, Ohio, will also be in attendance for Gypsy Day. W. A. Hack, superintendent of the School for the Blind; Al Hamre, S. Dak. treasurer; Eric Heidepriem, for-mer member of the Board of Regents; Bernard Linn, commissioner of School and Public Lands; Chris A. Merkle, member of the Public Utilities Com-mission are also expected, as are sev-eral members of the legislature and other guests. High School Band. A''-so entered in the parade are: U.C.C.F., Aberdeen National Bank, Queen's Float, Doland High School Band, Association of Women Students, Cal Golz Motors, Eureka High School Band, N.S.T.C. cheerleaders, Eagles Auxiliary, Miller High School Band, Sophomore Class, St. Paul's Walther League, Langford High School Band, Graham Hall, League of Women Vot-ers, South Shore High School Band, Northern Dames, Rotary Club, Roscoe High School Band, Union Board, Cos- Les Johnson, present ruler of the Gyps, will crown the new king of the Royal Order of Gyps this evening at the Civic Theatre. The Royal Order of Gyps, an organization of fun-lov-ing, NSTC-boosting, local business men, will present their program in conjunction with the crowning of the new Gypsy Day queen and marshal and the "Waldo Presents" show. The Royal Order of Gyps was founded by the late C. H. Creed, its first king, in 1941. Since then, a Icing has been selected to reign in each succeeding year with the exception of 1944. Perkins stated that "all floats are to gather at Simmons Field at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and will proceed from 13th Avenue down Main." Howling Echo Club Conducts Mum Sale will be necessary when the mums are picked up. Members of Howling Echo will have them ready for distribution immediately following the Friday morning assembly at the Union. Cowhick And Winters Win Campus Vote Northern students and alumni will gather to pay homage to a tiny, fun-loving coed and a serious, slow-talk-ing young man tonight at the corona-tion ceremony. Chosen by popular vote of the NSTC student body on Wednesday, Oct. 4, as successors to the royal gyp-sy throne were Lorene Cowhick and Larry Winters. They will reign over the 1961 Gypsy Day, Saturday, Oct. 7. The revelation of the names of the new Queen and Marshal was an-nounced by Mrs. J. Howard Kramer, Queen Mother of the Gypsy Clan, at costume ball last evening. Miss Cowhick comes from Cresbard and is majoring in Music. Active on campus, she belongs to Wesley Club, Band, Choir, Brass Choir, Masquers Club, and Sigma Alpha Iota. She has been cornet soloist with the college band throughout her college career. In high school Lorene was one of the few named to play in the All State Band for four consecutive years. Miss Cowhick was sponsored by Wesley Club, Sinfonia and the Col-lege Band in her successful bid for Gypsy Queen. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Cowhick of Cres-bard. Winters, a social science major, hails from Seneca. Larry is a freshman counselor in Lindberg Hall and par-ticipates in many campus activities such as Young Republicans Club and the Inter-Religious Council. He holds the office of president in Phalanx and Wesley Club and is vice-president of South Dakota Methodist College Stu-dents. The new marshal was also spon-sored by Wesley Club as well as by Lindberg Hall. His parents are M and Mrs. Otis M. Winters, Seneca , Lorene's sister, Karolyn, and Larry's sister, Norene, are in a position to ex-change comments on their older sis-ter and brother.
