Northern just doesn't have the flexibility and would have to reduce the academic budgets in order to iden-tify funds to support the station at a meaningful level. Priorities call for academic ex-cellence and the support levels for academic programs are already underfunded. "A better tomorrow through counseling today." This is both goal and title of the S.D. Personnel and Guidance Association (SDPGA) Convention, which was held April 26-28 at the Aberdeen Holiday Inn. For Northern counselors, the conference highlight was when Darryl Zitzow presented Dr. Jan Jirouch with the Administrator Award. She received the award for her outstanding work as a counselor, educator, and SDPGA member. Dr. Jirouch was also in charge of coordinating this year's convention, which consisted of varied panels and presentations. Jane Pequette, Dr. James Hess, and Darryl Zitzow all helped by presenting seminars during the three-day conference. Several Northern students joined George Estes, also of Northern and Vice-President of the SD Indian Counselors Association (SDICA) by helping with registration and also with a panel discussion during Friday's Native American Workshop. The SDICA is a branch of the SDPGA. Shown above is Dr. Jirouch, center. On her left is Mr. Stotz, and on her right is Dr. Jerde, one of the seven charter members of the SDPGA. EX 13 OistEMT Volume 78, Issue 28 Northern State College, Aberdeen, South Dakota 57401 May 3, 1979 Psychology Major Approved by Cathy Coghlan The Board of Regents approved a major in psychology at Northern at their April 26-27 meeting. The general purpose of , the major, which re-quires 36 hours of study for a BS/BA degree, is to prepare individuals to be knowledgeable in the theoretical aspects of psychology as well as have an understanding of the dynamics of human behavior. Northern has had a psychology minor in the past. The non-teaching major, which was the only major requested by Northern, requires courses in General Psychology, Human Growth and Development, Human Behavior, Fundamentals of Human Consciousness, Research Methods in Behavioral Sciences and Individual Problems in Psychology. According to Dr. McFadden the proposal was approved because Northern: • has demonstrated having the resources, and faculty and library support to provide a quality program; • has strong student and regional interest. • has demonstrated the willingness and ability to reallocate resources from low priority and low enrollment programs in order to support the new major in psychology. Several attempts to institute a psychology ma-jor have been turned down during the last ten years. When it was resubmitted in the fall of 1978 the explicit proposal identified available funds. "At this time we are not anticipating an in-crease in faculty for the 1979-80 school year," said Dr. Jan Jirouch, Chairman of the Psychology Department. Jirouch also mentions that in 1978 when Darryl Zitzow went to work at the Counseling Center, the psychology depart-ment was operating with one less faculty member. To compensate, the department which normally has one teaching graduate assistant, now employs three. Faculty needs will be re-assessed in the future on the basis of student response to the program. Cast Sought by Paula Reisdorph A college and community pro-duction of the play, "Spoon River An-thology" will be presented on June 28-30, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Theater at 8:00 p.m. each night. This play has a variable cast, and its size will depend on the number who wish to participate. The play is open to any interested persons in the corn-munity, and most of the rehearsal schedules can be adjusted to meet time conflicts. Persons interested in being a part of this production should contact Richard Norquist at 622-2563. by Larry Jensen, Northern State College Vet's Club President The war in Vietnam was, without doubt, America's longest agony abroad, and no one has known that agony more vividly or paid for it more dearly than the men and women who were sent to fight. They have not only known the sacrifices of life and health that war inevitably extracts, but these men and women also faced the reality of returning to the moral burdens and social pressures that Vietnam generated. Recently, President Carter declared the week of May 28-June 3 as National Vietnam Era Veterans Week. For the first time since President Ford declared the end of the Vietnam War, in May 1975, we have been recognized as vet-erans. On May 11 at 6:00 p.m., Vietnam Veterans are sponsoring a Smorgas-bord at the V.F.W. (Aberdeen post). The proceeds from the event will be used to pay for T.V. and radio adver-tising, leading up to the week of May 28. We would like the support of the Aberdeen Community and we invite them to join us at the V.F.W. On May 25, Mayor Jeff Solem and Brown County Commissioners will sign a proclamation declaring the week of May 28 as Vietnam Era Week in the Aberdeen area. B.O.D. Completes Year by M.R. Amends, Government Editor The April 30 meeting of the Student Board of Directors closely followed the stated agenda. After roll call, approval of the agenda, and correction and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, the B.O.D. moved to the Commissioner's Reports. Commissioner of Entertainment and Activities, Wade Olsen, reported on Spring Fling. He disclosed plans to narrow the days in which activities would take place to two. This would be tried, to see if better attendance might be achieved. The Gypsy Days Committee report mentioned the desire to obtain a big name band for the opening of the week, in order to keep the suitcase circuit on campus for the week. President Rypkema commended Olsen for his work with the bands during the Spring Fling week. No reports were submitted by Housing or Communications. New Business covered the approval of Galen Weidner as the new director of the Student Services. The den will be open late during finals week, and the S.A. decided on which night the members would work. The Board also appointed Wade Olsen to attend the June meetings of the Search Committee for Dean of Students. It was decided that telephones in the S.A. offices would be disconnected during the summer months to economize. Bernie Schmidt was appointed to collect the S.A. mail during the summer months. A brief discussion was held on the lighting problems behind Jerde Hall, Briscoe Hall, and Steele Hall. The B.O.D. then adjourned. Vietnam 'Vet's' Host Smorgasbord Vietnam Era Week Declared
