Culture is topic of seventh Business Workshop UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS ABERDEEN, SD - The South Dakota Inter-national Business Institute (SDIBI), located on the campus of Northern State University, will be holding its seventh workshop in a series of eight from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednes-day, Nov. 15. The seminar topic is "Doing Business in a Multi-Cultural World." Topics to be discussed during the presenta-tion will include the importance of culture, overcoming the ethnocentric bias, areas where cultures tend to differ and managing, marketing and negotiation in a multi-cultural world. Keynote speaker for the presentation will be Dr. John E. Cleek, professor of international business at the University of Missouri-Kan-sas City, where he is also director of the Center of International Business. In addition, Cleek is the founder and CEO of a $3 million import/export management and trading com-pany, serving clients throughout the world. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky in 1967. This workshop is offered through the Rural Development Telecommunications Network, and it will be broadcast in the following cities: Aberdeen, Mitchell, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Vermillion and Watertown. For more informa-tion, call 626-3149. The remaining workshop in this series spon-sored by SDIBI is "Overview of the Letter of Credit Process" on Dec. 13. Students successfully completing the exams above the estab-lished scores would be per-mitted to continue their edu-cation with their academic program. The Board believes this will respond to the public and legislative concerns about the preparation of university graduates. This initiative will eventually require that each baccalaureate degree recipi-ent demonstrate his or her competence in communica-tion, quantitative skills, prob-lem- solving skills for the first phase. The second phase would be in his or her major field of study prior to gradu-ation. The hands-on seminar will consist of two presentations taking place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, in the Krikac Administration Build-ing, Computer Lab 106, on the NSU campus. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the front desk in the Administration Building. The morning sessions will consist of a broad overview of the Internet and how small businesses can use the In-ternet for a variety of pur-poses. Specifically, this over-tification of it so a pilot pro-gram can be conducted in the Spring of 1996 and the first phase of the initiative fully implemented in the Spring of 1997. The Board recognizes that the variety of branches in learning makes addressing the cri-teria in the students field of study a complex task, so the schedule for implement-ing the second phase has not yet been established. The committee conduct-ing the comparison of the measurement instruments will look at a number of vari-ables, including cost, test times and flexibility in ad-ministration, and the avail-ability of student scores and norm or criteria references, along with matching the ob-jectives of each test with the objectives of the Board's accountability concerns. In-cluded in the inventory of existing instruments are: College Outcome Mea-sure Program (COMP) College Assessment of view session will include electronic mail, an introduc-tion to Internet browsers (Netscape), navigating the "net," obtaining government data and other information via the Internet, download-ing information, network searches, visiting commer-cial sites and using the In-temet to do market research. A familiarity with microcom-puters and general knowl-edge of Microsoft Windows would prove helpful to the participants. The afternoon session will provide an introduction to publishing on the Internet using a web publishing soft-ware package. Complete hands-on training will be comprised of an overview of publishing on the Internet; commercial homepage pub-lishing; hands-on training in building, editing and saving homepages; hosting homepages; graphics; say- Academic Proficiencies (CAAP) Academic Profile (AP) Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) The Academic Affairs Council and the Council of Presidents and Superinten-dents are "recommending that students general proficiencies be measured by a rising junior exam." The initial review indicates the exam can be designed to measure college level proficiencies and that it might be less expensive and implemented more quickly than a senior exit exam. This initiative is intended to demonstrate that each student reaches the appro-priate levels of achievement; it is not an assessment of program success or a means to improve the curriculum.
