— 125 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald (Olivet) May 22,1890 James McClain reports a little wire-worm working in his cornfield that eats the ge'rm out of the kernel of seed and as a.-consequence he will have to plant 20 acres over. Susan B. Anthony will speak at an equal rights convention to be held in Olivet May 27. An evening session will be addressed by Mrs. M. Sey-mour Howell. Both ladies are cel-ebrated speakers, being well known throughout the United States and no one should fail to hear them whether believing in giving women the right to vote or not. An average of five feet of water is estimated to fall annually over the whole earth; and assuming that con-densation takes place at an average height of 3,000 feet, scientists con-clude that the force of evaporation to supply such rainfall must be equal to the lifting of 322,000,000 pounds of water 3,000 feet in every minute, or about 300,000,000-horsepower con-stantly exerted. 100 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald May 20,1915 Move your farm nearer town by buying an Indian Motorcycle from Emanuel C. Mettler. An exchange tells of a new way to kill gophers. Take a bottle of gasoline and some cotton to the field. When you see a gopher go in a hole, wet a bunch of cotton with gasoline, put it down in the hole and cover the hole well with dirt. The gasoline fumes kill the gopher. Mrs. Andrew Orth and Mrs. Bellon went to Phoenix, Ariz., to be present when Wm. Orth graduates. Jacob Kromberg sold his house to Jacob Diede for $3,250 and will build another soon. After an illness of about two years, G.A. Haisch passed away May 12 at • 80 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald May 23,1935 Carolyn Frasch, a junior at Yankton College, will present a piano recital in the high school. Helmuth Mettler was out in the country and saw Emil Schoenfish's 12-year-old boy doing a good job of planting corn all by himself. He also plowed over 100 acres with their Mc- Cormick-Deering tractor. A farmer who bought seed corn of O.F. Carlson brought in a sample that was about two inches high above ground, but the roots were long, one being seven and a half inches long. The corn came from some of Carl-son's relatives near Beresford. The cold weather caused the roots to grow while the plant above ground did not make much headway. Warm weather in June will bring such corn along in fine shape. 50 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald May 20,1965 Sally Handel of Menno will per-form on the pipe organ at a recital at the Forbes Hall Auditorium on the Yankton College Campus. She is a ju-nior sacred music major and is study-ing organ with Dr. Evelyn Hohf, pro-fessor of sacred music and Dean of Yankton College. Eva Ulmer passed away May 14 at 74 years of age. Mrs. Chris Sogge died at the home of heFdaugnlefTrivermillion. Mrs. George Baney died at 71 years of age~~ Mrs. Ruben Nusz wishes to an-nounce the forthcoming marriage of her daughter, Veronica Kay, to Delmar J. Schoenfish, Sunday, June 20. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hauck of Avon. Mrs. Hauck (Maureen Heer) is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Heer of Menno. 30 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald May 22,1985 A baby boy was born to Tim and Jean Reiners May 20 named Tony Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Zeeb are the par-ents of a son, Timothy Earl, born May 6. 15 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald May 17,2000 Rhonda Larson and Jim Isaak an-nounce their engagement and upcom-ing marriage planned for Aug. 26. There were many people at the Ed and Shirley Auch auction sale in Oliv-et. It was reported that the house sold to Mr. and Mrs. Silas Wannamaker of Delmont for $16,100. Gary Herman of Menno started as Hutchinson County Emergency and Disaster Services Director on April 1. With 33 years experience on the Menno Fire Department, he re-cently decided to branch out and dis-cover what else he could learn about emergency services by becoming the Hutchinson County Emergency and Disaster Service Director. The posi-tion was previously known as the Civil Defense Director. Herman started his new position after Civil Defense Di-rector Ed Magera retired.
