125 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald (Olivet) September 11,1890 The total number of stars of which some knowledge may be obtained by the optical appliances now available, according to Prof. Lockyer, is from 40,000,000 to 50,000,000. Of these only about 6,000 are visible to the na-ked eye, equally divided between the two hemispheres. The ladies of St. Louis make life a burden to the gripmen on the cable cars by punching them in the back with their parasols when they want the cars stopped. It is stated that Peter Flemmer who left Menno a short time ago with his adopted daughter for Sioux Falls has returned, and says that he left her in Chicago. Andrew Woodmansee has leased the farm of J.C. Boyles for next year. Boyles will be a resident of Olivet ear-ly in the spring. Elmer George and family removed to the residence owned by P.M. White in the southeast part of town. 100 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald September 9,1915 Olivet had the misfortune to lose one of its stores. Sam Walter's store burned to the ground with nearly all the contents. We are informed that Otto G. Schamber has purchased the Spencer News of editor E.J. Morgan. Schamber will have the assistance of his brother-in- law P.O. Seifert who is a practical newspaperman and formerly was edi-tor of the same paper but sold out to go west and take a claim which he still owns. It is reported that considerable stock is dying in Hutchinson County. Fred Bender Sr. bought Otto Si-mon's house which indicates that he will retire from the farm and move to town. Andrew J. Mettler sold 12 head of yearling Hereford heifers for an even $100 each. 80 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald September 12,1935 On Sunday evening, Sept. 8, at Grace Lutheran parsonage, occurred the marriage of Henry Wohl of near Menno and Dorothy S. Gross of Free-man, Rev. Heuer officiating. T.H. Kirschenman suffered a pain-ful accident when he received burns in the face when a small pail of gasoline ignited. He and Emil Kirschenman had car trouble, the gas would not feed into the carburetor, so T.H. stood on the running board of the car and poured gasoline in while the car was moving. The motor backfired and the fire ignited the gasoline and T.H. was covered with fire. He had the small bucket of gas in the wrong hand to throw and had to drop it fast and in do-ing so dropped it, burning, inside the car. T.H. jumped off the moving car and hurt his head but succeeded in put-ting out the fire by rolling over. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gunderson at-tended the wedding of Mrs. Gunder-son's brother Eldred Hesla of Wakon-da and Bernice Brooks at Scotland. Postmaster A.N. Kautz and family attended the funeral of Jacob Kautz, 53 years old, of Chicago, who was killed while riding a bicycle in Chica-go, being run down by an automobile. The man was a younger brother of Abe Kautz. Dr. Kingery says he has had 65 cas-es of sick horses to doctor and has not lost one this season. Albert Bender was plastering the Henry Quasi corner where Dr. Adams had his office before he began work-ing for the government in tuberculin eradication. John Hertz and wife are here visit-ing his sister Mrs. Wellner. John for-merly went to school in Menno, then went into the railroad business and he and Otto Eckert are two passenger train conductors from the old town of Menno. Hertz runs out of Sleepy Eye, Minn., and Eckert from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, Jake Heer of Pocatello, Idaho, is another railroad man from Menno and may also be a conductor. 50 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald September 9,1965 Tarrell Miller, 19, has joined the an-nouncing staff of KYNT, Yankton.
