125 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 16,1890 A gentleman by the name of Mc- Donald has leased the old post office building of G.W. Baker and will put in a harness shop. Tillie White has secured the school in the Mellinger district. G.W. Williams is making arrange-ments to build a large corn crib in Olivet and will deal in this cereal the coming winter. 100 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 14,1915 J.C. Boyles of Yankton has been visiting at the home of his brother-in-law W.C. Haynes. Boyles bears the distinction of receiving the first cer-tificate to teach school ever issued in Hutchinson County and taught the first school at Olivet 41 years ago for $16 per month and boarded around among the scholars. He was also clerk of courts for 15 consecutive years. Helmuth Schnaidt, Fred Bender Jr., Henry C. Edelman and others were busy all day Tuesday arranging places for stock during the stock show. Albert Jungman was around collecting the subscriptions. John Hasz bought a team of black horses of Fred W. Mettler for which he paid $475. Mettler was offered $600 for the team early in the spring but could not let them go. Hasz is using the team on the oil tank wagon to de-liver Standard Oil Co. products. John Decker has sold the home ranch on the Jim River, formerly owned by John Decker Sr. and yet some calamity kickers are howling hard times. The farm known as the Grandpa Kelly farm near Milltown sold at auc-tion for $65 per acre. When a pig comes in contact with a motor car, there is usually a dead pig. Keep your hogs off the track. Christian Kirschenman rigged up a Moon car to pull a road grader and was at work on the streets Monday. He put another axle under the auto in front of the hind axle, then took off the demountable rims and tires and put them on this additional axle. He next put small sprocket wheels on the hind driving axlejand large sprocket wheels "on the additional axle. This gives him about four times the power so he can pull two road drags with two men on each. He proposes to use this on the farm and laugh at those who thought he could not make it work. John Koerner Sr. and Mrs. Wm. Ulmer were married and all Kleinkas-sel people have the best wishes for the two people. 80 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 17,1935 Art Edelman and wife drove up to Ree Heights to visit Sunday and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Mueller came home with them Sunday evening. Henry Sayler passed away at 59. George and Merle Larson, Leonard and Ernest Gunderson, who are at-tending Augustana Academy at Can-ton, spent the weekend with the folk at home. 50 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 14,1965 Theodore Donner died Oct. 5. Mr. and Mrs. Elver Hehn and son Warren of Missoula, Mont., came to visit in the Richard Hehn home, also the Lindy Corth and Clarence Her-rboldt homes and with others. Elaine Carol Dummer became the bride of Jerry Cooper Sept. 26. 30 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 16,1985 The Menno Fire Department was called to the Wally Neth farm south-east of Menno. There was consider-able damage done to the wiring of a tractor. At the regular Olivet Town Board meeting the decision was made to keep the old fire truck. It is believed that the old truck of nearly 40 years can be useful as an advertising imple-ment in parades and in other entertain-ment. There are many uses for older vehicles if people want to work with the project. Sunday morning, Oct 13, Rev. and Mrs. Wenzel announced that a new granddaughter, Heidi, had recently ar-rived in the home of their son, Mark and his wife Martha, who live in Ari-zona. Sarah Rames accompanied her niece, Patty Roske, from Denver, Colo., and has been a houseguest in the home of her sister, Mrs. Elmer Johnson. She plans to spend this week as the guest of her sister, Winifred Winne. 15 YEARS AGO Hutchinson Herald October 18,2000 Henry and Janelle Bender announce the birth of their son, Samuel Henry Oct. 1. Jeremy and Dara Bezug announce the arrival of a baby boy Sept. 30, named Jacob Samuel. OLIVET & WITTENBERG NEWS
